Country Music And Yodeling? You Betcha !

Did I ever tell you that I can yodel? I grew up listening to the sounds of Eddie Arnold and Hank Williams, both of whom often yodeled in some of their songs.

Two of my favorite songs from the 1950's era were "Cattle Call" by Eddie Arnold and "Lovesick Blues" by Hank Williams. Both songs went to number one in their time and I learned to sing both songs. My brother and I used to listen to (AM) radio and sing along with the songs. Of course, in those days, there were no specialty stations and you might hear Hank Williams, followed by Frank Sinatra. They just played the top songs of the day regardless of style.

Country ballads often had choruses of yodeling. Jimmy Rodgers is important as the graft where the yodel meets blues. Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Gene Autry, Merle Haggard, and many others have been known to yodel now and again.

Patsy Montana became country's first solo female star. She had a big hit with "I Wanna Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart". In that era it seemed every singer wanted to be a yodeling cowboy.

There were many other singers who yodeled in their time and, occasionally, and you still hear a little today from time to time. Chris Isaak yodels occasionally in some of his songs. I still love it and occasionally when I "jam" with other musicians, we'll do a couple of old yodeling songs.

The Pictures: Dinosaurs (excluding my ex-mother in law) from the Cretaceous Era are a portion of today's photographs. The chalk cliffs of Germany is the featured picture today. I'm preparing some Christmas pictures that I'll run soon, some are cryptic, some blatant and some are just "purty".

This Date In History: 1936; Edward VIII, king of Great Britain and Ireland for 325 days, becomes the first English monarch to abdicate the throne voluntarily. 1941; Two days after Congress passed a declaration of war against Japan, Germany and Italy declare war against the United States. 1946; The United Nations establishes the United Nations International Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to provide relief and support to children living in countries devastated by war. 1997; Delegates at the Kyoto, Japan, conference on global warming agree to cut emission of greenhouse gases by 5.2% of 1990 levels during the years 2008 to 2012.

Birthdays: Hector Belioz, French composer (1803), Annie Cannon, American astronomer (1863), Fiorello La Guardia, American politician (1882), Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Russian writer and Nobel laureate in literature (1918).

The Hits Just Keep On Coming: The

Three country boys were working high up on a cell phone tower - BubbaHank, and Cooter. As they start their descent, Cooter slips, falls off the tower and is killed instantly.

As the ambulance takes the body away, Bubba says, "Well, dang, someone should go and tell his wife." Hank says, "OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it."

Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Coors. Bubba says, "Where did you get that beer?" Hank replies, "Cooter's wife gave it to me." Bubba says,"That's unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you beer?"

Well, not exactly", Hank says. "When she answered the door, I said to her, 'You must be Cooter's widow'." She said, "You must be mistaken, I'm not a widow.", then I said "I'll bet you a case of Coors you are."

Country boys Are Good At Sensitive Stuff........

That's it for today my little gift wrappers. More tomorrow.

Stay Tuned !

LOVE Chris Isaak. Another contemporary guy who can yodel is Brian Setzer. We saw him live a few years ago, and yes, he can really do it.
